The Roman occupation at Lynch Farm 2 forms a small part of a much larger Roman settlement seen only on air photographs. This consists of scattered buildings over an area 800m wide and is unlike most local villa or farmstead establishments, although a growing number of parallels for such settlements is now being added to the literature.
A late Iron Age farmstead remained occupied until the mid-4th century AD. A ditched enclosure contained roundhouses and rectangular timber buildings for most of this time. Although the buildings fell into decay in the late 3rd century, surface spreads of dark earth containing 4th-century material suggest that the site continued to be occupied.
Small farms and roadside or green-edge settlements were typical of the medieval claylands in Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk. These types of dispersed settlement are well known from documentary records and field survey but few have been subject to modern open-area excavation and the recovery of detailed structural, economic and environmental evidence.
