Oxbow Books is committed to the publication of high quality, academic books and we are able to offer a flexible service for print, eBook and open access (OA) titles. Open access allows you to share your research freely, without restriction, and content may be shared and re-used (with appropriate accreditation); you retain copyright in your research.
We can offer Gold Standard* and Green Standard** OA options. Books will be published with a Creative Commons License with a digital version of the book available for download. Usually, Oxbow will also produce standard print copies to be sold and marketed alongside all our other non-OA titles.
Titles may be published OA immediately on publication or after an agreed embargo period, on payment of the appropriate fee. Many research funders and institutions provide funding for OA fees and authors should check before requesting an OA option with us. Our charges cover costs such as editorial work, production, marketing and hosting services, presenting the same level of editorial and design quality in both print and online.

Endorsements for our Open Access Program
“We have very much enjoyed collaborating with Oxbow to produce seven volumes in the CREWS series, all available with open access as well as in print, meaning that our research has quickly reached a worldwide audience. Everyone at the press has been friendly, helpful and very fast in turning round each publication. It is the published outputs that will speak for the success of the research project, so we were delighted to work with such an effective publisher!”
— Pippa Steele, PI of the CREWS project (Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems), University of Cambridge
“Open Access Publishing is becoming increasingly important as a way of the disseminating the results of major research projects, although for most of us publishing in this way means a new way of working. I found the support I received from the editorial team at Oxbow incredibly important both before submission – for example ensuring that the text and illustrations were all in good shape – and during the production process. The result is two print volumes that have been produced to extremely high standards, and a pair of open access PDFs that have made them accessible to the widest possible audience. The quality of my experience of publishing with Oxbow made them the automatic choice for my book!”
— Prof Stephen Rippon, University of Exeter, UK, editor of Exeter: A Place in Time (2 volumes, Oxbow Books 2021)
*Gold OA means that the final published version of your work is permanently and freely available online for anyone, anywhere to read. ** Green OA, also known as self-archiving, allows you to post an earlier version of your manuscript in University repositories and online. Our full policy on Green Standard publication is available on request.
