The aim of this book is to find the link between words and household objects. Using ostraca and papyri from the workmen's village at Deir el-Medina, the author discusses both the kind and relative frequency of furniture and wooden receptacles used in a typical New Kingdom home. Forty words referring to normal household objects also feature in the remarkable and previously unpublished Ostracon Varille 19. These are compared with other occurrences in order to assess how common each article was in the life of the community.
